This module is designed to provide students taking the proposed new MA in English with practical experience in literary activity and publishing through work on a campus literary e-zine. A sign of a vibrant English literature programme at any University is the existence of student-run literary magazine. Many students in English and other majors are interested in pursuing editing and publishing careers; as such, this module offers a collaborative enterprise within the structure of the proposed MA in which experience can be gleaned with such vocations in mind.

Over the course of the module, students will develop, in collaboration with faculty, a framework within which they can receive submissions of writing, creative and critical, from students at the University of Limerick. The output for this course will emerge in the semester following the module as a yearly journal of UL-based writing, hosted by the MA in English. While students on the MA may submit their own creative and critical works, this module is intended to connect graduate studies in English to a broader campus initiative, drawing upon the literary creativity of the broader student community. In providing such a forum, this module will further students' applied experience in the examination, assessment and analysis of literary texts. They will develop a sense of the practical difficulties and possibilities involved in the process of editing a literary journal, and in so doing they will add a clear vocational dimension to their literary studies in a collaborative, team-oriented publishing venture.

Formulate, develop and implement a design for a UL-based e-zine of creative, non-fiction, and critical writing. Compose creative and/or critical pieces for such a journal. Provide a forum for campus-wide literary activity. Select, edit, and proofread manuscripts for publication. Help design and layout a literary magazine.

Analyze other literary magazines for content and approach, and develop their own criteria for a successful submission and a successful literary magazine; Add a clear vocational element to their literary learning in a collaborative, team-oriented publishing exercise.

The goal of this module is that the cohort of the MA in English will independently edit, and publish a literary e-zine in the context of a 3 credit module. This journal will be produced in consultation with faculty in the English section who, in their meetings with students, will workshop various topics related to publishing, and discuss other magazines in terms of content, presentation, and technique. Students will also read and select work submitted from the student body.
